Upgrade Schedule 2024 - 2025
The Chicagoland Roofers’ Joint Apprenticeship and Training Program is scheduling classes for this winter at our training facility. Listed below is information on the various classes offered. Classes are limited in size, so it is important for you to enroll as soon as possible, to ensure availability. Please call our office to reserve your spot as soon as possible, at (708) 246-4488. Journeyman and Apprentices are welcome. These classes are voluntary. Some classes are only arranged through your contractor. These are the classes marked with an asterisk, see the class information for details.
Upgrade
Additional classes may be added as needed.
Members who wish to upgrade their skillset can utilize the facility for practicing roofing or waterproofing systems, please contact the apprenticeship office for availability. The apprenticeship will continue to provide the membership with OSHA 10 and OSHA 30-hour classes, CERTA, CERTA recertification classes, foreman training, rigging, signaling and CPR/First Aid classes. As a reminder if your certifications are not up to date, please contact your contractor or call the apprenticeship for availability. (These classes fall under the Continuing Education Program. Each employee will be paid at the continuing education rate of $30 per hour.)
Rigging
This is a one-day training class that will meet or exceed OSHA’s requirements for a Qualified Rigger. This class includes: tying 5 knots used in rigging, Identify, select and attach, rigging equipment, proper inspection of rigging equipment before and during use, and recognize hazards of material handling / overhead lifting. Formal testing will be done using both a written and practical exam. You must have taken a rigging class prior to attending this training
Signaling
This is a one-day training class that will meet or exceed OSHA’s requirements for a Qualified Signal Person. This class includes: Signals (hand and voice), crane dynamics, safe work practices and powerline safety. Formal testing will be done using both written and practical exam. You must have taken a signaling class prior to attending this training.
Boom Truck Operator
Boom Truck Operator class: This is a 2-3-week program tailored to new boom truck operators (journeyman / apprentice). This course will consist of classroom and hands on training. At the end of the training each applicant must pass an NCCCO written exam. The applicant will then have 1 year to pass the practical test. If anyone is interested, please speak with your contractor. The applicants will receive wages and benefits for this training. If you would like to attend any of the classes or events listed, please call the apprentice office at (708) 246-4488.
Online Training
All NCCCO certified Boom Truck operators must enroll and attend a training program administered through the Joint Apprenticeship Program to receive two dollars (2:00) over the employee’s applicable wage rate for operating and driving the boom truck. All Licensed CDL drivers must enroll and attend a training program administered through the Joint Apprenticeship Program to receive one dollar ($1:00) over the employee’s applicable wage rate for driving an employer’s CDL required vehicle. You must have an NCCCO certification or a valid CDL license to sign up for the online training.

Carlisle / Syntec Building Products Seminar
A Carlisle technical representative will give this seminar. Keep up to date on the latest products and details requirements for their various roofing systems.
Soprema Seminar
This seminar will cover Soprema’s various roofing systems. A technical representative will give this seminar.
Sarnafil Roofing Systems Seminar
This seminar gives you the opportunity to learn Sarnafils PVC, and hot air welded systems and detail requirements. A technical representative will give this seminar.
Johns Manville Seminar
This class will focus on heat welding and detail requirements for Manville’s membranes, and various roofing systems. A technical representative will teach this seminar.
Firestone Building Products Seminar
A Firestone’s technical representative will give this seminar. Keep up to date on the latest specification requirements for their roofing systems.
GAF
Learn the latest GAF heat-welding details and have an opportunity to apply them with hands-on training.
Health and Safety
C.P.R. / First Aid
This class will include the correct C.P.R. techniques and basic first aid for cuts, burns and shock. Cards will be handed out on successfully completing the course. This class will also be available to Roofers’ spouses.

Scaffold Training
This class must be arranged through your contractor. This class meets the City of Chicago’s requirements.

C.E.R.T.A Training
This class must be arranged through your contractor. Certified Roofing Torch Applicator Program. This training is required for Contractors who are insured with C.N.A. Insurance and use torches on the roof. This training program will teach safety, application techniques, known facts of propane gas and combustion, and safe roofing practices on torch applied membranes. Upon successful completion roofers will be issued certificates and I.D. cards. Fee: $220.00 for NRCA member. This fee is the contractor's responsiblity. Attendance for this class is arranged through your contractor.

C.E.R.T.A Recertification
This class must be arranged through your contractor. A Prerequisite for this class is a current C.E.R.T.A. applicators card or one that is about to expire. This 4 hour class is required to extend your status as a certified approved roof torching applicator for three more years. Fee: $180.00 for NRCA member. This fee is the contractor's responsibility. Attendance for this class is arranged through your contractor.

OSHA 30 Hour Construction Course
This is a 4-day course that teaches safety awareness as it pertains to Roofing & Waterproofing & helps each worker recognize & reduce the risk of jobsite hazards. These classes must be completed within 6 months from the start of the first class to obtain an OSHA card.

OSHA 10 Hour Construction Course
This is a 2-day course that promotes safety awareness among workers, reduce workplace injuries, foster a culture of safety and help companies comply with OSHA regulations. These classes must be completed within 6 months from the start of the first class to obtain an OSHA card.

Asbestos Supervisor Refresher
This class must be arranged through your contractor. A Prerequisite for this class: you must have a current Illinois Department of Public Health License. This class is an EPA required class for Roofers State of Illinois Supervisors' licenses. To register for this class you must call the Roofers Apprenticeship, 708-246-4488. (An additional fee may be required for this class.)

Asbestos Worker Refresher
This class must be arranged through your contractor. This class is required to keep up to date on your asbestos worker training requirements. Completion certificates will be issued.

Asbestos OSHA 8-Hour Worker Course
This class must be arranged through your contractor. This class complies with OSHA requirements for workers removing asbestos when contained in roofing materials. Completion certificates will be issued.

Other
Manlift Training
Basic training requirements for inspecting and operating a manlift. Both classroom training and practical training included. Practical training will include operating a JLG articulating manlift. A minimum of 10 student is required.

OSHA Crane and Derrick -Fix Cab / Boom Truck Operator Certification
This class must be arranged through your contractor. A five day course and testing. Three days of classroom and two day of practical training and testing. NCCCO Certification. Meets OSHA’s New Standard. Attendance only arranged through your contractor.

International Foremen Training: Part 1 or Part 2
This class must be arranged through your contractor. Training to help foreman become more effective managers on the jobsite. Part 1 includes, Communication, Problem Solving, Math, Safety, Teaching, Demonstration and Record Keeping. Part 2 includes, Leadership skills, Motivation, Blue Prints and Specifications, Job Setup and Managing the Job Site. Only foremen may attend. 20 to 25 students minimum.

Small Engine Repair: Beginner / Advanced / Engine Tear Down
This is a 9 week course which can be broken down into individual levels. Beginner course will be 4 Saturdays - maintenance and simple repairs. Advance class is 2 Saturdays - repairs and trouble shooting. Engine Tear Down is 3 Saturdays - tearing down engines and rebuilding them. Anyone taking the Advance and / or Engine tear down classes only must already have a good basic understanding and knowledge of engines. Jon Brennan of Power Equipment Sales, Co., will be the instructor.

English Speaking Course
The Apprenticeship Program is conducting a 2 year, 26 week course on English as a second language. These classes will address construction and the roofing trade terminology. Classes will begin in January and be held on Saturday afternoons.

This class helps promotes unions, build strength, engage their members and advocate for workers rights. It's designed to equip union members with the knowledge & skills necessary to engage in sustainable building practices specifically focusing on green roof & solar installations.
