Training Schedule - 2023-2024

The Chicagoland Roofers’ Joint Apprenticeship and Training Program is scheduling classes for this winter at our training facility. Listed below is information on the various classes offered. Classes are limited in size, so it is important for you to enroll as soon as possible, to ensure availability. Please call our office to reserve your spot as soon as possible, at (708) 246-4488. Journeyman and Apprentices are welcome. These classes are voluntary. Some classes are only arranged through your contractor. These are the classes marked with an asterisk, see the class information for details.

UPGRADE CLASSES: ADDITIONAL CLASSES MAY BE ADDED AS NEEDED
The classes listed below are designed for Roofers who have never worked with or have limited experience with these systems. These classes are very basic with emphasis on "hands on".

  • E.P.D.M.:  A hands on class with emphasis on seam details, wall details, pipe flashings, curb flashings, corners etc.

  • B.U.R.:  A hands on class involving mopping techniques and applying of drains, curbs, walls, scuppers, felt machine operation, and kettle operation.

  • Hot Air Welding:  A hands on detail class including the hot air welding of seams, curbs, corners, pipes, drains, and machine operation.

  • Modified:  A hands on detail class using APP torch applied and SBS mopped applied membranes. Details include: drains, pipe, curb and wall flashings.

  • Shingles:  A hands on class on the installation of shingles in a valley and around chimneys, dormers and thru pipes and vents.

  • Slate & Tile Classes:  This is a 5 class series focusing on the proper steps for starting and detailing slate and tile roofs.  The classes involve classroom and hands on training.

  • Hot Rubberized Asphalt:  Hot fluid-applied, rubberized asphalt used for waterproofing and roofing application. Learn to apply and detail with classroom and hands on training.  Learn to apply and detail with classroom and hands on training.

  • Garden and Vegetation Roofs:   Learn about the various garden roofs and the components that make them up. Learn to apply them through classroom and hands on application.

  • Air Barrier & Waterproofing:  The basic requirements of installing the self adhered, roller, and spray applied membranes of the building envelope system and below grade waterproofing application. This will be a classroom and hands on class.

  • Formen Training:  8 hour course to satisfy the contract requirements. Class course may include: Fall protection, hazard recognition, Math, Blue print & Specifications and Communication Skills. Foremen only.

  • Fall Protection Competent Person Course:   An awareness training program for the Roofing Industry. This course was developed under an OSHA grant by the Roofers, Waterproofers’ Joint Education Trust Fund. A two day course on the various fall protection methods. Classroom training with group activity exercises. On completion of the course, completion certificates will be given out.

  • Rigging and Signaling:  This will be a hands on class.

    MANUFACTURER CLASSES: IF YOUR COMPANY IS INTERESTED IN SCHEDULING A CLASS WITH ONE OF THE FOLLOWING MANUFACTURERS OR ANY OTHER ROOFING MATERIAL MANUFACTURER, PLEASE HAVE THE MANUFACTURER OR COMPANY CONTACT US.

      GAF:  Learn the latest GAF heat-welding details and have an opportunity to apply them with hands-on training.
      Firestone Building Products Seminar:  A Firestone’s technical representative will give this seminar. Keep up to date on the latest specification requirements for their roofing systems.
      Johns Manville Seminar:  This class will focus on heat welding and detail requirements for Manville’s membranes, and various roofing systems. A technical representative will teach this seminar.
      Sarnafil Roofing Systems Seminar:  This seminar gives you the opportunity to learn Sarnafils PVC, and hot air welded systems and detail requirements. A technical representative will give this seminar.
      Soprema Seminar:  This seminar will cover Soprema’s various roofing systems. A technical representative will give this seminar.
      Carlisle / Syntec Building Products Seminar: A Carlisle technical representative will give this seminar. Keep up to date on the latest products and details requirements for their various roofing systems.

    HEALTH AND SAFETY CLASSES:
      *Asbestos OSHA 8-Hour Worker Course:  This class must be arranged through your contractor.
      This class complies with OSHA requirements for workers removing asbestos when contained in roofing materials. Completion certificates will be issued.

      *Asbestos Worker Refresher:  This class must be arranged through your contractor.
      This class is required to keep up to date on your asbestos worker training requirements. Completion certificates will be issued.

      *Asbestos Supervisor Refresher:  This class must be arranged through your contractor.
      A Prerequisite for this class: you must have a current Illinois Department of Public Health License.
      This class is an EPA required class for Roofers State of Illinois Supervisors' licenses.
      To register for this class you must call the Roofers Apprenticeship, 708-246-4488.
      (An additional fee may be required for this class.)

      OSHA 10 Hour Construction Course: This is a two-day safety class. An OSHA card and Safety booklets from the Roofers International will be issued.
      (Both class dates must be attended to receive an OSHA 10 hour card.)

      OSHA 30 Hour Construction Course: This is a 4 day class. If you never attended an OSHA 10 hour class or attended a class over 6 months ago you must attend all four days. If you attended a class within 6 months you only need an extra 20 hours to complete the 30 hour course.

      *C.E.R.T.A Recertification:  This class must be arranged through your contractor.
      A Prerequisite for this class is a current C.E.R.T.A. applicators card or one that is about to expire.
      This 4 hour class is required to extend your status as a certified approved roof torching applicator for three more years.
      Fee: $90.00 for NRCA members, $130.00 for non-members. This fee is the contractor's responsibility. Attendance for this class is arranged through your contractor.

      *C.E.R.T.A Training:  This class must be arranged through your contractor.
      Certified Roofing Torch Applicator Program. This training is required for Contractors who are insured with C.N.A. Insurance and use torches on the roof. This training program will teach safety, application techniques, known facts of propane gas and combustion, and safe roofing practices on torch applied membranes. Upon successful completion roofers will be issued certificates and I.D. cards.
      Fee: $160.00 for NRCA members, $200.00 for non-members. This fee is the contractor's responsiblity. Attendance for this class is arranged through your contractor.

      *Scaffold Training:  This class must be arranged through your contractor.
      This class meets the City of Chicago’s requirements.
      User / Builder TBA   7:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.

      C.P.R. / First Aid: This class will include the correct C.P.R. techniques and basic first aid for cuts, burns and shock. Cards will be handed out on successfully completeing the course. This class will also be available to Roofers’ spouses.

    OTHER CLASSES OFFERED:

      M.O.V.E. / C.O.M.E.T. and Green Roofs: Members will understand the reason and need to organize. Learn how it affects our local union. Green roofs: Learn the various kinds and the different methods of installation.

      English Speaking Course: The Apprenticeship Program is conducting a 2 year, 26 week course on English as a second language. These classes will address construction and the roofing trade terminology. Classes will begin in January and be held on Saturday afternoons.

      Small Engine Repair: Beginner / Advanced / Engine Tear Down
      This is a 9 week course which can be broken down into individual levels. Beginner course will be 4 Saturdays - maintenance and simple repairs. Advance class is 2 Saturdays - repairs and trouble shooting. Engine Tear Down is 3 Saturdays - tearing down engines and rebuilding them. Anyone taking the Advance and / or Engine tear down classes only must already have a good basic understanding and knowledge of engines. Jon Brennan of Power Equipment Sales, Co., will be the instructor.

      *International Foremen Training: Part 1 or Part 2
      This class must be arranged through your contractor.
      Training to help foreman become more effective managers on the jobsite. Part 1 includes, Communication, Problem Solving, Math, Safety, Teaching, Demonstration and Record Keeping. Part 2 includes, Leadership skills, Motivation, Blue Prints and Specifications, Job Setup and Managing the Job Site. Only foremen may attend. 20 to 25 students minimum.

      *OSHA Crane and Derrick -Fix Cab / Boom Truck Operator Certification:
      This class must be arranged through your contractor.
      A five day course and testing. Three days of classroom and two day of practical training and testing. NCCCO Certification. Meets OSHA’s New Standard. Attendance only arranged through your contractor.

      Manlift Training:
      Basic training requirements for inspecting and operating a manlift. Both classroom training and practical training included. Practical training will include operating a JLG articulating manlift. A minimum of 10 student is required.
